Person Esther PlompEsther is an Open Science enthusiast and enjoys to contribute to a more equitable way of knowledge generation and to facilitate others in working more transparently. Esther started as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Aruba Research Center in January 2025. Here she works on improving the visibility of UA Researchers and their research outputs and provides support with funding opportunities, particularly regarding the data management component. Esther also works on several research projects, such as her eScience Fellowship project on tracking research objects (other than peer reviewed articles), and a Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship on facilitating contributions to open source/science communities, with a focus on The Turing Way. Her research field is Bioarchaeology, with a particular focus on Isotope Archaeology.Person Morsen, RomanoRomano Morsen is born and raised in Suriname, has an educational background and 13 years of experience in (higher) education. In 2022 he started his career as senior educational specialist at the University of Aruba and since November 2023 he holds the position of Quality Assurance Manager at the University of Aruba. In this position he is responsible for the quality assurance of the institution, the faculties and the programs at the University of Aruba. Besides that, he is also in charge of the education policy of the university, faculties and programs as well as the professional development of the academic staff. He is the chair of the Interfaculty Quality Meeting and the Interfaculty Platform for Exam Committees at the University of Aruba and is a member of different other committees. Romano is also a part – time lecturer at the Faculty of Accounting, Finance and Marketing. Currently he is an external PhD Candidate at the Open University in the Netherlands. His research is about professional development of lecturers in the 21st Century where he aims to create more engaging lecturers within higher education in Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Educational & Agogic Sciences and a Master of Science degree in Education and Research for Sustainable Development, both obtained at the Anton the Kom University of Suriname. He also holds the teaching certificate of the Teachers’ College in Suriname and the University Teaching Certificate of the Anton the Kom University of Suriname which makes him a first-degree lecturer in higher education. With his educational background and experience he held different positions as university lecturer, program manager, education manager, trainer and consultant within different higher education institutes and ministries in Suriname.Person Arens, PatrickPatrick Arens is the business director of the University of Aruba. On top of his daily tasks, in the past years he has engaged in the development of education and research programs for sustainable development in small island states, including the SISSTEM program.Person Mertens, AnoukAnouk Mertens worked a postdoctoral researcher and project manager at the KU Leuven for the SISSTEM project. Currently, she works as a consultant for the University of Aruba Research Center. As a graduated bio-science engineer at the KU Leuven and having obtained a master in Environmental sciences and management at the Université Catholique de Louvain, she is skilled both in exact as well as social sciences. During her PhD in at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University, in collaboration with the Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (graduated in 2017) she became skilled in mixed-method research approaches with participatory qualitative research methods and the development of quantitative (agent-based) simulation models. Her research interests are in sustainable development in a small island state context, education for sustainable development, and the circular and bioeconomy. Anouk attended various national and international conferences and is also the (co-)author of several research articles published in international peer reviewed journals.Person Lejuez, JasonJason Lejuez is a part-time lecturer in the Faculty of Accounting, Finance and Marketing at the University of Aruba.Person Lopez, TysonTyson Lopez is a part-time lecturer at the University of Aruba. The academic journey of Tyson Lopez started with attaining his Bachelor's diploma in Organization Governance and Management at the University of Aruba in 2014, after this Tyson started to work as a Policy Officer for the Prime Minister of Aruba. In 2015 Tyson decided to pursue a master International Development Studies at Utrecht University, which he completed successfully. After returning to the island, Tyson returned to his previous employment. For a moment Tyson worked for the Office of European Union and Kingdoms Relations as a Policy Analyst. Tyson was approached afterward to become the Program Manager at Aruba Excellence Foundation which is the management organization for the Aruba Certification Program, an educational program for the hospitality industry. Currently, Tyson is employed at the Aruba National Park Foundation which is a conservation management organization for the terrestrial and marine protected areas of Aruba as the Sales, Sustainability, and Recreation Manager. Currently, his main employment is at the Aruba National Park Foundation as the CEO of the Aruba Conservation Foundation. Tyson's research interests center around sustainability, tourism, management, and strategy.Person Vinck, MennoMenno Vinck was a part-time lecturer at the University of Aruba. Lecturing at the University of Aruba is a very rewarding activity for Menno as he genuinely enjoys interacting with the students and guiding them where possible. Additionally, Menno's research interests center around Fiscal Sustainability, Public Finance, and Tax Reform. His research methods include qualitative research, focus groups, interviews, participant observation, and surveys. Menno's main employment is as Sr. Manager Business Development for BearingPoint Caribbean. In 2009 Menno attained a master’s degree in International Business at the Universidad Camilo José Cela in Madrid, Spain. For the past 13 years, Menno has worked in revenue management modernization. In those years he has visited over 35 tax administrations worldwide. Menno witnessed how tax administration performance can prosper when tax officials are empowered with the right digital tools. Moreover, Menno participated in numerous large-scale Information Technology projects and likes to share best practices observed in both the private and the public sectors. Furthermore, Menno is a regular public speaker, addressing conference audiences on 5 continents in recent years. Additionally, sports have always been a big part of Menno’s life. As an active athlete, as a board member or as a spectator.Person Briceño, JudelcaJudelca Briceno has been a part-time lecturer in the Organization, Governance and Management program of the Faculty of Arts and Science since 2013. She teaches the Module Quantitative Research Methodology. Judelca's main employment is as a policy adviser in the Government of Aruba, specializing in Labor Market and (Public) Health. She did her Master's at the University of Utrecht and has a Master of Science degree in Psychology of Labor, Organization and Health. My special interests are diversity, government, (public) health, organization & management, leadership, and well-being on the work floor. Judelca also holds several teaching certifications including Test and Assessment in Higher Education (Toets en Beoordeling in het hoger Onderwijs (TOBO)), Didactic Design in Higher Education (Didactisch Ontwerp in Hoger Onderwijs (DOHO)), FAS Minitraining. Judelca's research interests center around Public Health, Social, Labor market, Organizational Management, and Human Resources. Her research methods include quantitative research and surveys.Person Richardson, GregoryDr. Gregory Richardson, is a cultural anthropologist and educator with over 15 years of teaching, research and policy development experience in the field of culture, music, language, history, ethnicity, identity and education. One of his main research approaches is ethnographic research. His research has culminated in 3 book publications, numerous book chapters and other projects. He also has an enormous interest in expressions emanating from urban spaces such as Caribbean style carnivals, dance, rap and hip-hop culture, dancehall reggae, soca, Latin Caribbean music, Afro beats, youth culture, creole languages and urban slang.Person van Spaendonck, JorritJorrit van Spaendonck currently works as a lecturer at the University of Aruba where he is the originator and coordinator of the Minor International Financial Management. His topics of expertise are financial markets, business analysis and corporate finance. Besides his academic work, Jorrit has published over 500 articles in practitioners journals, assessing a wide range of listed securities. Previously, Jorrit worked in several roles at investment management firms both on the institutional side and for a leading private wealth management company in the Netherlands. He has a master’s degree in economics from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and is a CFA charterholder.Person Taylor, DonDon Taylor is a University of Aruba lecturer (part-time) in the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management Studies, Honorary Counsel of Jamaica in Aruba. Mr. Taylor is a Certified Public Accountant CPA with post-graduate degrees from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, De Monfort University, and the City of London University and with almost 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry as Director of Finance throughout the Caribbean including the Dominican Republic, St Maarten, Bonaire, and Jamaica and Aruba.Person de Scisciolo, TobiaTobia de Scisciolo is a STEM lecturer in the Academic Foundation Year program at the University of Aruba. He is also a Part-time PhD Candidate at Wageningen University. Tobia holds a Master's Degree in Marine Ecology and Resource Restoration. He is also passionate and interested in research about coral reef ecology and restoration and education for sustainable development.Person Becker, TatianaTatiana Becker is a part-time STEM lecturer in the Academic Foundation Year program at the University of Aruba. Tatiana holds a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies from the Inholland University of Applied Sciences and a Master's Degree in Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management from Wageningen University. She is passionate and interested in researching Marine Ecology.Person Jurgens, SharonaSharona Jurgens is a junior lecturer at the University of Aruba and simultaneously a doctoral student at the Catholic University Leuven (KU Leuven). She has a background in Earth Sciences. Her doctoral research is titled Spatial Analysis of Urban Metabolism in Small Island States and is focused on the interaction between society, nature, and the economy.Person Sultan, SalysSalys Sultan is an associate professor in the Faculty of Arts and Science faculty and SISSTEM program at the University of Aruba. She is also the SISSTEM master program coordinator. Salys has over 20 years of professional and problem-solving experience. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science, a European Master's degree in Informatics, and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Management. Currently, her research interests include data science for sustainability, software engineering, and STEM learning design.Person Facun, KryssPreviously to working for the University of Aruba Kryss was the Research & Development Liaison Manager for the Micro-Algae Project at Refineria di Aruba (RdA), where she did a feasibility study on the possibility of cultivating spirulina and reported her findings. Kryss has attained a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of Utrecht, where she worked in the laboratory on the susceptibility of Arabidopsis on biotrophic pathogens as well as enzymatic assays on thermophilic fungi at the CBS-KNAW. In addition, she did volunteer work and became part of the staff at RotterZwam, a company that grows grey oyster mushrooms on coffee waste. This engendered her keenness for sustainability.Person Semerel, JeltzlinJeltzlin Semerel is a junior lecturer and researcher at the University of Aruba and a doctoral student at KU Leuven. She is currently pursuing ways to valorize Aloe vera waste to produce value-added products for applications in fuels, chemicals, cosmetics, and medicine. Jeltzlin has a bachelor's degree in Molecular Life Sciences with a minor in Bio-nanotechnology from Wageningen University. She also has a Master's Degree in Biotechnology specializing in Process and Marine biotechnology.Person Laclé, FrancisFrancis Laclé is a junior researcher at the University of Aruba and a doctoral student at KU Leuven. His doctoral research lies in the cross-section between health, machine learning, and digital signal processing. The greater aim is to support the elderly on islands such as Aruba to live longer, independently, and with a good quality of life. This involves identifying specific roles that technology can play in personalized care services and prototyping novel or innovative ideas. Francis has a Master's degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor's degree in Information and Communications Technology. His passions are sustainability science, artificial intelligence, and computational teaching. He further believes that science and education are our best tools for helping us face the greatest challenges of our time.Person Laclé, FrancielleFrancielle Laclé is a junior researcher and lecturer at the University of Aruba. She is currently conducting her PhD in a sandwich program between the University of Aruba and the KU Leuven, Belgium. Her PhD is on social innovation and just resilience in the governance of marine and terrestrial ecosystems in small island social-ecological systems. At the University of Aruba she has prior experience as a lecturer for the course Environmental Science within the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management Studies (FHTMS), the course Small Island Developing States within the Faculty of Arts and Science program Organization, Governance and Management (FAS-OGM) and is currently a lecturer for the courses Principles of Sustainability as well as Environmental Law and Policy within the Sustainable Island Solutions through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (SISSTEM) program. Her research has been focused in the fields of environmental sociology, human geography, environmental economics, and sustainability science.Person Acevedo, DiegoDiego Acevedo is a senior lecturer and researcher at the University of Aruba. His research is focused on the Valorization of Reverse Osmosis Brines, in essence looking at the economic value that the brine left over from the desalination process with a specific focus on the value for small islands dependent on desalination systems. Diego holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering (magna cum laude) from the University of Florida and a MSc degree in Sustainable Energy Technologies from TU Delft (The Netherlands). He has previously worked on the development of innovative technological solutions related to marine energy, district cooling networks, potable water generation, and marine-based floating solar PV electricity generation. Some highlights of his work include being the founder of Eneda Engineering Services VBA, an Engineering Consultancy firm focused on Renewable Energy and Circular Economy with a special focus on Marine and Island solutions; and being co-founder of Bluerise BV, now part of Allseas Engineering BV, working on Ocean Thermal Energy Technology development.
