Abstract
This research aims to determine the influence of applied management styles on employees' work motivation in two similar organizations in Aruba; one from the public sector (Serlimar Sui Generis), and the other from the private sector (Ecotech N.V.). The main research question of this study is: “How does the applied management style influence employees’ work motivation?” The literature review concentrates on the different management styles and their characteristics. Furthermore, it focuses on the motivations and hygiene factors that determine the motivational level of employees. The literature review was used to formulate hypotheses and to develop the theoretical framework. The influence of management styles on employee’s work motivation was tested by using surveys among employees of both organizations dealing with waste management on Aruba. The differences and relationship between the applied management styles and the level of employees’ work motivation were identified and compared through the use of SPSS. Results show that all four management styles (autocratic, democratic, paternalistic and the laissez-faire) were perceived by both Serlimar and Ecotech. Moreover, Serlimar and Ecotech experienced the same predominant type of management, namely the laissez faire management style. In addition, both companies have the same situation where employees are highly motivated. Further results indicate that there was a positive correlation between paternalistic, democratic, and the laissez faire management style and the general level of employees’ work motivation. However, for both companies, there was no significant relationship between autocratic management style and employees’ work motivation.
