Abstract
This research aims to rate the employability skills from the perspective of the managers in the Aruban labor market compared to the rated employability skills of recent UA graduates. The main question is: How do employers’ rate the level of importance of employability skills of graduates of the University of Aruba and is there a difference between the level of importance of the employability skills from the perspectives of managers and graduates? The literature review focuses on the perspectives of managers and alumni concerning employability skills. Moreover, the literature review discusses the difference between the perspectives of managers and alumni. To answer the main question, three sub-questions and one hypothesis were formulated and measured. The theoretical framework used for this research was created by the US department of education. Furthermore, the Employability Skills Framework is based on a theory which involves the concept employability skills which, is divided into three sub-dimensions; applied knowledge, effective relationships and workplace skills. The participants of this research were 47 alumni of the University of Aruba and 49 managers in the Aruban work field. The Employability Skills Framework is the source for the research tool that was created to gather data. To test the theory, two different research tools were created. One self-administered questionnaire was developed for the managers and another self-administered questionnaire for alumni. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test were conducted. The results show that employers rate the importance of employability skills of UA graduates as ‘very important’. Furthermore, there is no difference in the scored level of importance of employability skills between the managers and alumni. Both groups find employability skills very important.
