Abstract
The topic of this thesis is “Early detection of vision disorders in children in Aruba and assurance of timely care and services: The strategy of the Multidisciplinair Team Vroegtijdige Onderkenning van Visuele Stoornissen (MDT- VOV). The aim of this paper was to determine the extent that the efforts of the MDT-VOV in the past ten years led to the early detection, treatment and guidance of children with vision disorders in in Aruba. The method to conduct the research was a mixed method approach. This consisted of qualitative and quantitative research to make use of existing data and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings illustrate that the yield of the current detection strategy of the MDT-VOV in numbers of cases is 192 children detected during a ten-year span. Furthermore, the findings of the challenges and recommendations for further improvement of the detection strategy of the MDT-VOV demonstrated that the biggest challenge that was mentioned by both parents and team members is the diagnose at young age (lack of, late or conflicting). A recommendation that was mentioned by both parent and team is to keep informing the parents. At last the findings illustrated that, the biggest challenge of early intervention mentioned by both the team and parent is to be able to receive more support of the health care service AZV and the recommendation mentioned by both team and parent is to keep informing the parents of the children with visual impairment because this is essential in the guidance of a child.
