Abstract
In 2019, the Aruban government set in motion a plan to build an all-inclusive hotel in the vicinity of San Nicolas. Proponents of this initiative argue that the communities in the southeastern part of the island have not been able to reap the benefits of Aruba’s economic development during the past few decades because all of the hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions have been built on the northwestern coast, just north of the capital Oranjestad. A few dissenting voices warn that Aruba’s economy is already overly dependent on hospitality. Some fear that mass tourism could transform San Nicolas, currently billed as the “cultural and artistic capital of Aruba”, into yet another generic destination for sun-and-sand vacationers. This case study can be adopted as an educational tool in classrooms to stir debate among students, look critically at public discourse, and come up with creative alternatives for economic development.
