Abstract
The primary aim of this study is to examine to which extent job conditions, family conditions and job attitudes influence absenteeism in the public sector of Aruba. As well as to which extent do family conditions act as a moderate variable in the relation between the level of emotional exhaustion (job burnout) and absenteeism. In addition, examine if there is a significant difference in the absenteeism frequency between males and females. A quantitative research was conducted in which several indicators were used to measure the possible relationship between the variables. A conceptual model was adapted with proposed hypotheses to study these relationships and by using a questionnaire approach data was collected among two governmental departments. These departments are National Library Aruba (NLA) and Department of Labor and Research (DLR). Results of this research showed that neither family conditions, job conditions nor job attitudes have an influence on the absenteeism rate at these departments. This study concluded that the relationship between the level of emotional exhaustion and absenteeism is not moderated by family conditions. Moreover, being male or female does not influence the difference of absent level in these departments. Overall, this study recommends further studies to include other indicators of job conditions such as job complexity and pay/salary systems to measure absenteeism. As well to include reports of absence from the respondent’s personnel files in the questionnaire at the moment of collecting data, to change the absence culture into an attendance culture, conduct quantitative research on larger groups and to take a qualitative approach for further studies.
