Abstract
Innovative companies like Google and Apple improved employee performance by finding success investing in a better physical environment for their employees. This research aimed to focus on the effects that physical working environment had on employee performance in Aruba. The main research question of this research was as follows: How does the physical working environment relate to the employee performance in one public and one private organization in Aruba? To help address this main research question, the following sub questions will be asked: 1. How is employee performance defined and measured? 2. Which factors of physical working environment stimulates the employee performance in the participating organizations? 3. What factors of physical working environment hinders the employee performance in the participating organizations? One private and one public organization in Aruba were selected as participants of this research to provide perspectives of both sectors. Furthermore, the perspective of an Aruban
corporate health organization was included. After 13 interviews were conducted, it was determined that the physical working environment did have an effect on employee performance; both short and long term. As stimulating factors were mentioned: big shareable offices, the importance of peace and quiet and flexibility of temperature and lighting within offices. As hindering factors were mentioned: noise, air quality, temperature and flexibility of color selection within the offices. Furthermore, it was discovered that it is important to define employee performance and make it clear how it will be measured throughout the entire organization. Lastly, there was need to have standard accessible buildings as well as lactation rooms present.
