Abstract
This qualitative research was conducted to analyze how the UA as a higher educational institution responded to the financial struggles the pandemic brought upon its students, specifically students going through underprivileged situations or coming from low-income backgrounds. The central research objective of this thesis is to shine light upon the need for more financial support for students going through underprivileged situations or from low-income backgrounds that encounter financial challenges during their studies at the University of Aruba. Discovering the before mentioned objective will also help identify, voice, and give a deeper understanding of the perception of students going through underprivileged situations or coming from low-income backgrounds regarding the financial policies of the UA. Moreover, another objective is to encourage the University of Aruba to evaluate possible policies regarding financial assistance for the inclusivity of students from low-income backgrounds. In addition, this research could also reduce the negative narrative that underprivileged students from poverty-stricken backgrounds are incapable of furthering their academic careers toward higher education. As a result, the main research question for this qualitative research is: “What policies does the UA have in place to financially support students going through underprivileged situations or coming from low-income backgrounds and how do these policies motivate these students to persist through their academic journeys toward a higher education
degree?”. The main research question was also paired with three sub-questions to provide a better outlook into the participants’ perception regarding financial assistance that could motivate them to further their educational objectives.
