Abstract
Motivation is studied in diverse domains and seems to be problematic in Aruba. This research addressed motivation in Aruba by using Deci and Ryan’s Self Determination Theory as well as the Developmental Niche framework developed by Harkness and Super. The objective was to use a culture and human development approach to understand motivation of youth in Aruba and therefore broaden the theory on motivation. Simultaneously, the aim is to deepen our understanding of motivation of Aruban youth and to explore ways to foster intrinsic motivation in Aruban students. Participants were students from three vocational schools between 16 and 25 years old. A mixed methods approach was used exploring motivation through questionnaires (n= 481) followed by interviews (n=33). It seemed that cultural expectations and supportive settings play an important role in fostering motivation. Students voiced the importance of self-development, and it is recommended to implement personal development tools within cultural support systems such as institutions to boost intrinsic motivation.
