Abstract
Mental health and wellbeing issues have been a growing concern worldwide affecting the working population with potential impacts on the individuals themselves, organizations and society as a whole. The aim of this exploratory research is to investigate the most common work-related mental health issues and their risk factors including the COVID-19 pandemic at two organizations, analyze the impact on three levels and provide strategies that can lead to the creation of a resilient workforce. The main research question of this study is “What is the impact of mental health issues on a micro, mezzo and macro level and which strategies can contribute to a mentally healthy and resilient workforce at the two selected organizations?”. This explorative research is based on a qualitative methods approach and utilized purposive sampling in order to select the participants. In total 14 participants consisting of employees, employers and professionals in the field of mental health support contributed to the results of this research. The
data collection process was executed through semi-structured interviews accompanied by three different topic lists. The data was analyzed through thematic analysis. The data showed that mental health issues has an impact on the person involved and their family, the organization and the Aruban society. Recommended strategies aim at three levels, namely, prevention; identification of early symptoms and risk factors to avoid progression of mental health issues; and support employees who have mental health issues to recover (primary, secondary and tertiary interventions). One prominent finding is the importance of creating awareness and educating the Aruban community on aspects related to mental health and wellbeing to avoid stigmatizing and stimulate openness and timely help seeking.
