Abstract
This paper aims to review the factors influencing the import prices of fruits and vegetables on Aruba. As prices are rapidly increasing, wholesalers are indicating numerous factors for the steep prices. This paper will review the nature of this increase and the impact it has on the Aruban community. Furthermore, this research intends to evaluate opportunities for improving food security by promoting agriculture on Aruba as well as for broadening the field for import and trade agreements. The main research question “What factors influence the import costs of fruits and vegetables on Aruba, and what actions can be undertaken to mitigate the volatility of prices and to ensure sustainable supply of these products to the benefit of consumers?” has been formulated to conduct the research. A qualitative research method was chosen to conduct the research. Semi-structured interviews were held with the stakeholders. The results show that the participants agree that the prices of fruits and vegetables on Aruba are steep. There are some
possibilities that could help reduce the import prices of fruits and vegetables on Aruba such as: increasing the port efficiency, introducing the possibility to utilize Roll-on Roll-off boats and bundling however the stakeholders should collaborate to make this a reality. Based on the results, exporting more products (mitigating directional imbalance) seems to be the most promising possibility to reduce the import prices. Furthermore, the participants are aware of the possibilities and the importance of agriculture. However, there are a few factors that can help improve the possibility of farming on Aruba. The possibility of farming on Aruba can be facilitated by giving the farmers incentives such as lower water and electricity tariffs, increasing land obtainability for agriculture and increasing the possibility for financial aid for farmers.
