Abstract
This thesis reviews the research of the performance management system being utilized within Marriott Aruba. The research that was conducted, assessed the performance management system and its influence on employee performance. The performance management system was investigated based on three topics, namely, the design of the system, the implementation of the system, and leadership influences. The main research question that this investigation set out to answer was: “What impact does the performance management system have on employee performance within Marriott Aruba?” This research is of qualitative nature with semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, a total of three groups consisting of employees, managers, and human resources representatives among the three Marriott Aruba properties participated in this research. The results indicated that the PMS of Marriott Aruba has a significant impact on EP due to the way it is designed, implemented and managed, and supported by the HR. However, the impact of the PMS on employee performance has never been officially evaluated, but the design has been improving during the years, and the changes has been communicated and implemented. The results also show that aside from leadership, human factors (as an additional factor for this research) may also have an influence on employee performance. Furthermore, the results illustrate no difference in the design, the implementation and/or management of the three properties of Marriott Aruba. The reason therefore can be that all three properties experience the same organizational culture, organizational goals, the focus on employee engagement, implementation, and leadership styles.
