Abstract
The primary aim of this research is to assess the factors that contribute to a high absenteeism rate in the public organization of the Departamento di Aduana (DAA), and to determine the relationship between the concepts poor job conditions, job attitudes, family conditions and absenteeism at the DAA. The main question of this study is: “To what extent do poor job conditions, job attitudes, and family conditions affect the overall absenteeism rate of the organization of the Departamento di Aduana Aruba?” Based on the findings, a conclusion and recommendation will be given. A quantitative research was conducted to determine the relationship between the different concepts and absenteeism within the DAA. More specifically, the indicators work overload, low flexibility of work hours, work stress, job satisfaction, job motivation, job commitment, number of children under 10 present at home, childcare arrangements, and number of hours on housework were used to measure the relationship with absenteeism. To help answer the main research question, a theoretical framework was adopted with three formulated hypotheses. Data was collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire at the DAA. A total of 90 respondents out of 100 filled out the self-administered questionnaire. This had a 90 percent response rate and a 10 percent nonresponse rate. Results show that there was no relationship between poor job conditions and the absenteeism rate at the DAA. Further results indicate that there was neither a relationship found between family conditions and the absenteeism rate. On the other hand, the results of this study show that there was a significant relationship between job attitudes and the absenteeism rate at the DAA. The two concepts that showed the strongest relationship with absenteeism were job motivation and job satisfaction. From this research, it is recommended that the management department provide better support and understanding to the employees. This includes the channel of communication, and the relationship (such as trust, teamwork and cooperation).
