Abstract
This research aims to gain insights into the perceptions of employees in Aruba's tourism industry regarding diversity management practices, specifically in recruitment, selection, and talent development processes. Researching these perceptions can encourage organizations to develop or maintain effective strategies to initiate or continue managing diversity, which can influence social equity in the workplace. Diversity-focused strategies and management can lead to improved business performance, employee satisfaction, and a competitive edge. The main research question for this qualitative study is: “What are the perceptions of employees in the tourism industry in Aruba regarding diversity management, specifically in the recruitment/selection and talent development processes?” Fourteen semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with employees working in the tourism industry in Aruba. Findings show that employees share common perceptions of diversity, stating that diversity is a mix of cultures. Furthermore, the findings show that some employees perceive no disadvantages to working in a diverse environment, while others highlight communication challenges within a diverse working environment. The findings also indicate that diversity management is practiced in the recruitment/selection and talent development processes in the tourism industry. However, employees could not identify diversity-specific policies in their organizations, and they stated that diversity training is not given. It is recommended that organizations in the Aruban tourism industry begin to create, promote, and inform employees on diversity-specific policies/ programs, and organizations should and/or implement diversity training for all employees.
