Abstract
In 2009, Aruba has been challenged by the global financial crisis to sustain its economic strength. In that same year a new administration was elected to govern the island. This new administration brought a new economic vision and policy titled “The Green Gateway: a knowledge driven entrepreneurial economy” (Ministry of Economic Affairs, 2011). It brought forward an economic action plan to achieve the desired economic conditions. The economic action plan consists of four economic action lines, for this research the three economic action lines ‘National Innovation, ‘Investment Promotion’ and ‘Business Growth’ are being analyzed. The main research question is: How did the economic action plan of ‘The Green Gateway’ vision and policy, as implemented, provided for favorable conditions for the operations in the logistics sector to take entrepreneurial actions on the firm level? Interviews were conducted with respondents in the logistics sector to evaluate the conversion of the economic vision and policy into entrepreneurial actions. The entrepreneurial actions were categorized by elements such as ‘Start- ups’, ‘Entry into new markets’ and ‘Innovation’ that link entrepreneurship to economic growth. The conclusion based on this research is that the government policy may have helped sustain the operations in the logistics sector but did not stimulate the entry into new markets nor conduct innovations. The most salient measure that may have contributed to support the operations of the logistic sector was the government investment in improving infrastructure.
