Abstract
The ecosystems of small islands, like Aruba, are under increasing pressure from human activities, climate change, and invasive species, leading to biodiversity loss and threats to the services they provide. Nature- Based Solutions (NBS) are proposed as a promising approach to address the challenges, while offering economic benefits and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and ecosystem restoration. While small-scale NBS projects are already active in Aruba, there is a lack of scientific validation of the effectiveness of these interventions and it is not clear how to support and govern such initiatives both from a political and economic point of view, to ensure their impact in the long term. Collaborative research projects between master and PhD students from Aruba and the Netherlands can provide insights into these questions, while at the same time, building capacity and promoting collaboration between the University of Aruba and Dutch Universities and colleges. By leveraging the academic community’s resources and expertise across the ocean, Aruba can further develop knowledge on and implement NBS that are tailored to its unique challenges and opportunities. However, financial support is needed to fund such research projects. In this document, we invite organizations, funds and entrepreneurs in both the Netherlands and Aruba to consider this opportunity to enhance the island’s ecological, social and economic resilience by advancing knowledge on NBS in Aruba. This can be achieved by sponsoring one or multiple master thesis students or PhD students. Your contribution will play a significant role in fostering a more resilient future for Aruba.
