Abstract
Business success requires a “strong culture” (Miller, 2016), and leaders play an important role in shaping the culture of an organization, as Sinek argues; “so goes the leader, so goes the culture” (2014, p.159). Thus, this paper intends to explore the culture and leadership of The Netherlands Marine Corp (RNMC) and try to understand how the RNMC is capable of nurturing employees and prepare them for leadership positions since the RNMC mainly promotes people from within their own organization. This information could be helpful for organizations and businesses who are also looking to nurture leaders within their own organization. This paper main research question is “Which factors within the organizational culture of the Netherlands Royal Marine Corp do officers (NCOs) and soldiers identify as contributors to the RNMC’s ability to prepare their employees for leadership positions?” Moreover, the sub-questions are “How do officers (NCOs) and soldiers at the RNMC experience the organizational culture within the RNMC?” “What are core practices of the RNMC according to officers (NCOs) and soldiers that help shape the organizational culture?” “Which traits/qualities are according to officers (NCOs) and soldiers of the RNMC expected from employees holding leadership positions within the RNMC?” These questions were answered by doing qualitative semi-structured interviews with 14 purposely sampled active members of the RNMC in Aruba. The three main concepts of this paper were found during desk research and are culture, core practices, and leadership. This is the basis of the thematic analysis that was done. The results of this research show that the socialization process, the brotherhood/teamwork, clear promotion path/hierarchy, and a clear leadership style vision are the key factors that contribute in preparing RNMC employees for leadership positions.
