Wieger Bakker has been an extraordinary professor at the UA with a chair in Governance, Community and Cohesion in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Aruba (UA) since 2020. Wieger is a sociologist by training, working in governance studies. He has an interest in (higher) education, citizenship, civil society and internationalization in relation to governance. From 2010 to 2018 he was director of the bachelor program of the Utrecht School of Governance and since 2015 he has held a chair in society oriented higher education. In 2018 he was appointed Utrecht University dean for lifelong learning. Building on the existing relation between the School of Governance and the University of Aruba he became involved in the Organization, Governance and Management program of the UA. From 2018 on he started working with the UA colleagues on developing the Institute for Good Governance and Leadership and a related new master program. Additionally, he is the deputy director of the Inter University Centre Dubrovnik. He also holds the teaching certifications of Certificate Basic University teaching qualification (BKO) and Senior Teaching Qualification (SKO). Wieger's research interests center around Higher Education Research, University Continuing Education Research, Adaptive Expertise Development, and (European) Citizenship. His research methods include Qualitative research, Interviews, and Mixed method research.
